What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-surgical, cosmetic procedure wherein a technician uses a concentrated light beam to eradicate unwanted hair down to the follicle. During the treatment, the laser emits light that hair pigment (or melanin) absorbs. That light is converted into heat, damaging the follicles that produce hair on the body.

The follicle damage delays future hair growth, yet the results are temporary. The treated hair will eventually reappear. Moreover, the initial hair removal will require multiple treatments, and maintenance treatments might also be necessary. Finally, the treatment works best on individuals with a light complexion and darker hair but can be successful on all hair and skin types.

When is it Necessary?

Although not medically necessary, laser hair removal appeals to individuals who want body or facial hair removed for one of several reasons. These include weddings, graduations, beach vacations, and more. The most common treatment areas include:

  • Legs
  • Armpits
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Bikini line

Aestheticians can remove hair on virtually any body part besides the eyelids (or near them).

How You Can Prepare for Treatment

Laser Hair Removal Bethesda MDThe best way to ensure a successful treatment is to select a doctor certified in dermatology or cosmetic surgery, ideally one whose laser hair removal experience is with your specific skin type. Be cautious about spas or salons that use nonmedical personnel for these procedures.

Before the treatment, consult a dermatologist to determine whether laser hair removal is appropriate for you. They will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss risks, benefits, and expectations
  • Take photos for assessments before and after the treatment

With a doctor’s approval and an appointment scheduled, ensure you:

  • Stay out of direct sunlight for two weeks before and after your procedure (or wear SPF30+ sunscreen)
  • Refrain from using creams or tanning lotions on your skin
  • Avoid plucking or waxing the area to be treated, as doing so can disturb the hair follicles
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications
  • Shave or trim the target area 24-48 hours before treatment to leave the hair shaft intact below the surface

What to Expect from Laser Hair Removal

Results typically appear after 2-6 appointments. On areas of the body where hair grows back quickly, the treatment may be repeated in 4-8 weeks; treatments might occur every 12-16 weeks for areas with slow hair growth.

The procedure involves a doctor pressing a laser instrument onto your skin. A cooling device will go on the instrument’s tip or a gel onto your skin to protect it. The laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles, and you might feel a warm pinprick and a cold sensation from the cooling device. Small areas—like the upper lip—could take as little as a few minutes, while larger areas—like your back—might require over an hour.

After laser hair removal, the treated area may show redness and swelling around the follicles for a few hours. It is a typical side effect and nothing to worry about, though you can apply ice to the area if it becomes bothersome.  Avoid direct sunlight between scheduled appointments, and refrain from using a tanning bed for 6 weeks following treatment.

Remember that the treated hair does not fall out immediately—you’ll shed it over days to weeks. Hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.
